A DC generator consists of the following essential components:
(a) Field system (stator).
Produces a stationary magnetic field.
Supplied by DC current (separate excitation or self-excitation).
(b) Armature (rotor).
Rotates inside the magnetic field.
Conductors cut magnetic flux and generate an induced voltage.
(c) Commutator.
Mechanical rectifier that converts internally generated AC into DC at the terminals.
(d) Brushes.
Provide electrical connection between the rotating armature and the external circuit.
