HP issues war cry to Cisco !

Vendor claims networking market is a two-horse race after its 3Com acquisition was recently finalised - Written by Caroline Donnelly

HP has declared war on former bedfellow Cisco, positioning its rival as the only vendor in the networking space with a product portfolio to match its own. The hardware behemoth said its recently closed buyout of networking vendor 3Com had provided it with a product portfolio that spans from the core to the periphery of the datacentre.

HP said the move also puts it “toe to toe” with Cisco well ahead of the chasing pack.

Darryl Brick, sales manager of HP Networking for the UK and Ireland, said: “Nortel, Broc­ade and Juniper are all major players, but some of them have glaring holes in their product portfolio.

“The acquisition has helped us put some space between ourselves and the other players and when we look ahead, we see only Cisco.”

The 3Com deal has also boosted HP’s share of the UK networking market from 12 to 15 per cent, to 20 per cent, according to Brick.

“We hope to push that figure north of 25 per cent,” he added.

HP’s challenge comes six months after Cisco announ­ced it was booting HP off its partner programme to stop its rival gaining access to product roadmaps and partner profitability initiatives. Simon Aron, managing director of joint HP and Cisco partner Eurodata, was not surprised that the conflict is hotting up.

“Cisco has dominated the market for so long,” he said.

“It is good news that HP has decided to step up and give it a run for its money because it means more choice for end users,” he added.

Clive Longbottom, service director at analyst Quocirca, said HP will write off the rest of its competition at its peril.

“If you want a single supplier approach, it comes down to Cisco and HP,” said Longbottom.

“But the vast majority of environments will not be that homogeneous and HP still has some holes [in its portfolio] that need filling by some other vendors.

“Therefore, it will need to cosy up to others in the market to fill those gaps.”
Steve Garrison, vice president of marketing at HP rival Force 10 Networks, said that despite Cisco and HP positioning themselves as all-in-one datacentre providers, there is still plenty of demand for vendors that specialise in one area.

“The Walmart approach, where you can get everything you need under one roof and from one vendor, is fine,” said Garrison.

“But what end users need to figure out is whether or not the solution on offer caters for each one of their business needs.”

Cyber threats to national security

Cybersecurity has increasingly become a national security priority over the past decade, according to a report by CACI and the U. S. Naval Institute (USNI). Cyber threats may be perpetrated with little cost and few resources. Cyber attacks are typically anonymous, launched from any of billions of sources worldwide. Impacts may be immediate and obvious, or elude recognition for years.

U.S. supply chains have historically been protected from threat because they were generally internal to North America, the report adds. This is no longer true in the cyber age. The vast majority of U.S. supply chains rely on information technologies that can be compromised at any time.

Global partners and worldwide connectivity increase the risk. The responsibility to protect U.S. cyber assets must be shared among the government, the private sector, and every private citizen.

CACI Chairman of the Board Dr. J.P. (Jack) London said, "The CACI-USNI report, Cyber Threats to National Security: Countering Challenges to the Global Supply Chain, captures the thinking of today’s leaders and experts in national security. It recommends strongly that the U.S. aggressively pursue supply chain security as part of a comprehensive cybersecurity policy."

USNI CEO Major General Tom Wilkerson said: "The recent WikiLeaks controversy should serve as a flare that warns us of how vulnerable we are to cyber threats. When a low-level analyst can easily access thousands of classified documents and instantly make them available to an international audience, it shows that our security is disturbingly inadequate. We must be diligent in identifying where and how we are susceptible to all types of cyber attacks and prevent more intrusions."

Data Center Stocks: Intel's Light Peak Optical Interconnect - Coming technology

Intel (INTC) made a big splash at its developer's forum in September 2009 by introducing its Light Peak technology. Light Peak uses a new controller chip with LOMF (Laser Optimized Multimode Fiber) and a 10G 850nm VCSEL-based module with a new optical interface connector, which has yet to be determined. It is aimed at replacing all of your external connectors on your PC including USB, IEEE 1394, HDMI, DP, PCIe, etc. It is also targeted at other consumer electronic devices like smart phones and MP3 players.

Intel designed both the controller chip and the optical module, but will only supply the chip. It is working with a couple of top optical component manufacturers on the modules—Avago (AVGO) and TDK. The semiconductor giant expects to ship its first products this year, but would not say who its initial customers will be. It did tell me that it has "received general support from the PC makers" and both SONY and Nokia have gone on record publicly supporting Light Peak. Both companies are willing to entertain a new standard centered on the Light Peak technology. These labors are expected to pay off with formal standardization starting this year.

According to Intel, Light Peak is expected to start shipping this year with several PC manufacturers evaluating it. Next year is anticipated to be a transitional year and by 2012, we should start seeing Light Peak commercially available on PCs. While I would never bet against Intel, this is quite an aggressive schedule. Even USB took longer than that to be adopted and it was a copper solution that was easily implemented by consumers. However, it sure would be nice to have just one connector for my PC!

While Intel says it has targeted this technology at consumers, with its 10G data rate and 100-meter optical reach, it could easily be extended to LAN and/or data center applications.

Inisiatif VOGUE cegah gejala sosial: Rosnah

SHAH ALAM – Program Voluntary Group for Everyone (Vogue) anjuran Pergerakan Puteri UMNO dilihat dapat menghindari remaja wanita daripada terjebak dengan aktiviti tidak sihat seperti kes pembuangan bayi.

Ketuanya, Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rasyid Shirlin berkata, usaha Puteri melancarkan VOGUE adalah menepis dakwaan masyarakat mengatakan golongan muda terutama anak-anak gadis tidak berminat dengan kerja-kerja sukarela.

“Program VOGUE ini dapat mendekatkan golongan muda supaya sama-sama menyertai aktiviti berfaedah, segar dan terkini yang mampu menarik minat golongan ini menyertainya sekaligus dapat menghindarkan mereka dari gejala sosial.

“Bukan mudah menarik minat golongan muda untuk menyertai aktiviti sukarelawan kerana pengaruh rakan sebaya, tarikan dunia hiburan dan kesibukan dalam kerjaya menjauhkan mereka dari cenderung untuk membuat kerja-kerja amal,” katanya dalam Majlis Pelancaran Vogue Sukarelawan oleh Timbalan Presiden UMNO, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin di sini, semalam.

Rosnah berkata, Vogue dijangka dapat memberi satu tarikan kepada orang ramai bukan sahaja bentuk dan aktivitinya malah mewujudkan rasa teruja, seronok dan terkini untuk melibatkan diri secara langsung melalui pengajaran, kemahiran dan kenegaraan.

Konsep Vogue yang digerakkan dan disertai oleh golongan muda kepada orang muda diharap dapat menghindarkan mereka dari gejala yang tidak bermoral.

Sementara itu, Muhyiddin berkata, beliau yakin inisiatif Puteri UMNO menggerakkan kerja amal menerusi skuad sukarelawannya tidak akan mengambil masa lama untuk mengubah persepsi rakyat terhadap parti itu dan Barisan Nasional (BN).

Facebook users hit 500 million!

SAN FRANCISCO, July 22 (Bernama) Facebook now has some 500 million active users, a milestone that strengthened its position as the world's largest and popluar social networking website, said the chief executive officer and the co-founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg.

"As of Wednesday (July 21) morning, 500 million people all around the world are actively using Facebook to stay connected with their friends and the people around them," China's Xinhua news agency quoted Zuckerberg as saying, adding that the number of Facebook users doubled in the past year.

Its users hit the 250 million mark in July 2009.

To celebrate the new milestone, the website is launching a new application called Facebook Stories where users can share their stories and read hundreds of others, categorized by themes and locations around the world, Zuckerberg announced in the blog post. Founded in February 2004, Facebook is now a privately held company and is headquartered in Palo Alto, California.

Melayu jangan lupa diri - Dato' Prof. Dr. Ir. Sahol Hamid (Naib Canselor UiTM)

SETIAP daripada 54 tahun sejarah kewujudan Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) adalah merupakan suatu perjuangan menonjolkan imej positif dan peranan utamanya kepada umum. Sehingga ke hari ini pun perjuangan itu diteruskan. Dari sebuah dewan latihan pada 1956 dan kini menjadi salah sebuah universiti utama negara, sudah banyak perubahan yang berlaku kepada universiti ini, namun falsafah asalnya masih sama dan tidak berubah. Universiti ini masih percaya bahawa anak-anak Melayu dan bumiputera kita, di sebalik latar belakang kekurangan dan kemiskinannya, jika diberi peluang untuk belajar, mereka mampu untuk bersaing dengan mana-mana kaum, dan mampu mengubah nasib keluarga mereka serta destini bangsanya. Dalam sejarah 54 tahun itu juga, UiTM telah melahirkan hampir 400,000 graduan yang kini mengisi keperluan tenaga profesional di seluruh pelosok negara. Ramai juga yang telah berjaya menjadi peneraju kepada industri di dalam mahu pun di luar negara.

Sewaktu para graduan ini menjadi pelajar, soal keselesaan tempat tinggal dan keenakan makan minum bukanlah menjadi utama mereka, begitu juga ia bukan agenda utama universiti. Apa yang diutamakan ialah graduan yang dilahirkan adalah berkualiti, penuh keinsafan tentang keperluan bangsanya serta mampu berdikari dalam kehidupan masing-masing. UiTM telah membuktikan, walaupun dalam kekurangan tempat tinggal yang selesa, kualiti graduan yang dikeluarkan adalah bermutu tinggi. Justeru, saya agak risau apabila ada segelintir ibu bapa sekarang yang merungut secara terbuka tentang ketidakselesaan tempat tinggal anak mereka semasa belajar di UiTM. Namun, bagi pihak pengurusan UiTM, kita memang telah menjangka akan timbulnya rungutan sebegini. Ini adalah kerana, di dalam usaha UiTM mempercepatkan penambahan cerdik-pandai bumiputera, banyak pihak terpaksa berkorban keselesaannya.

Berdasarkan pencapaian UiTM selama ini pihak kerajaan telah memberi kepercayaan penuh kepada universiti ini untuk meningkatkan enrolmen pelajar melebihi 200,000 orang menjelang 2015. Jumlah terkini pelajar UiTM adalah 172,000 orang yang kini belajar di seluruh sistem UiTM di setiap negeri. Walau pun pelajarnya ramai, pihak ibu bapa tidak perlu risau tentang kualiti pendidikan anak-anak mereka kerana UiTM tidak akan sekali-kali mengabaikannya. Secara umum dan kasarnya, jika dibanding pelajar dahulu dan sekarang, keselesaan pelajar-pelajar dahulu memang lebih teruk dan daif, tetapi mereka berjaya dalam pencapaian akademik mereka. Pada pandangan saya, kejayaan seseorang dalam suasana serba kekurangan itu akan lebih bermakna jika berbanding dengan sesuatu pencapaian yang didapati dalam suasana mewah dan mudah.

Apabila seseorang graduan UiTM yang kini telah berjaya menoleh ke belakang ia akan menghargai pahit getir yang pernah dilaluinya. Mereka akan menjadi seorang insan yang bersyukur. Insya-Allah, jika kita semua bersabar dan berpandangan positif, segala susah payah itu jugalah yang akan menjadi pengajaran berguna kepada mereka yang mahu belajar. Kita sedar, perubahan telah banyak berlaku. Pihak pengurusan UiTM dan ibu bapa berkongsi hasrat yang sama iaitu mahukan siswa-siswi kita mempunyai suasana tempat tinggal dan juga pembelajaran yang sempurna. Kesusahan yang dialami kini hanya bersifat sementara, kerana usaha berterusan sedang dijalankan untuk menambah kemudahan, terutamanya penginapan di seluruh sistem UiTM. Pihak UiTM tidak menafikan wujudnya kesesakan terutamanya pada minggu-minggu pertama pengajian. Tujuan UiTM memaksimumkan pengajian pelajar untuk tinggal di kolej-kolej kediaman adalah untuk meminimumkan jumlah pelajar menyewa di luar kampus.

Dalam suasana kesesakan kampus seperti di UiTM, ibu bapa mesti sedar yang kemudahan yang diberi adalah percuma. Maka itu kita janganlah terlalu cerewet tentang sedikit kekurangan yang mungkin timbul. Malah kita perlu bersyukur kerana masih ramai siswa yang tidak mendapat tempat. Saya mengesyorkan agar ibu bapa yang mampu menyewa rumah di luar kampus untuk anak-anak mereka untuk berbuat demikian. Ini adalah supaya pihak UiTM boleh memberi tempat yang kosong itu kepada pelajar-pelajar yang amat memerlukan. Dalam pengamatan dan pengalaman saya menguruskan sebuah universiti seperti UiTM ini, ramai orang kita yang lupa tanggung jawab kita bersama sebagai orang Melayu. Dalam keadaan kita senang, kita lupa akan keperluan orang lain dan kita lebih mementingkan diri sendiri. Perasaan sebegini mestilah dihapuskan.

Orang Melayu mesti sanggup berkorban demi untuk pembangunan bangsanya. Kita perlu bersatu dalam banyak hal. Orang yang berada mesti bantu yang berkurangan agar bangsa kita akan sama-sama naik mencapai puncak kecemerlangan.Ibu bapa juga mungkin tidak menyedari yang peranan UiTM bukan sekadar mendidik pelajarnya sahaja. Sebaliknya tujuan yang tersirat pula adalah untuk meramaikan golongan berpendidikan tinggi dari kalangan kaum bumiputera di negara sendiri. Mungkin ibu bapa juga tidak sedar bahawa hanya 30 peratus daripada jumlah pelajar yang memasuki universiti di negara ini terdiri dari kaum bumiputera. Cuba bayangkan jika tiada UiTM ini, atau jumlah pelajar yang diambilnya diperkecilkan, apakah yang akan terjadi kepada anak-anak bangsa kita?

Maka itu, janganlah kita lupa siapa kita dan siapa bangsa kita. "Rakyat Didahulukan, Pencapaian Diutamakan". Itulah slogan yang sentiasa dipegang dan dijunjung oleh pengurusan UiTM. Kerana mendahulukan rakyat, UiTM mengambil ramai pelajar agar lebih banyak peluang diberikan kepada pelajar-pelajar Melayu dan bumiputera yang telah lulus dengan baik di peringkat SPM/STPM/Diploma. Seandainya UiTM mengurangkan pengambilan pelajar maka terjejaslah peluang pengajian tinggi kepada anak-anak Melayu dan bumiputera. Perlu diingat bahawa kewujudan UiTM ialah untuk memberikan pendidikan agar bangsa Melayu dan bumiputera berada pada kedudukan ekonomi yang seimbang dengan bangsa-bangsa lain. Kerana itulah, UiTM seboleh mungkin menawarkan tempat kepada mereka untuk menimba ilmu.

Mundurnya bangsa Melayu ialah kerana kita tidak bersatu, bukan kerana tiada tempat untuk tinggal. Kita tidak mahu melihat ada bangsa Melayu sendiri yang tidak mahu melihat lebih ramai anak bangsanya berjaya bersama UiTM. Saya berharap, pelajar-pelajar yang mendapat tempat belajar di UiTM, belajarlah dengan bersungguh-sungguh, kerana pencarian ilmu saudara-saudari adalah satu perjuangan mengubah destini anak bangsa. Jadikan susah payah kini sebagai motivasi utama pendorong kejayaan untuk masa hadapan

Team Building - Pendekatan Pengurusan Pejabat Pembangunan Memantapkan Budaya Kerja Perdana UiTM

Pada hari ini sehingga jumaat ini saya berada di Kampung Gajah, Perak kerana terpaksa menghadiri program team building yang dianjurkan oleh Jawatankuasa Latihan, Pejabat Pembangunan, UiTM. Dalam taklimat yang disampaikan oleh En. Irwan objektif utama program ini adalah untuk mewujudkan keserasian frekuensi dalam berkerja di Pejabat Pembangunan. Justeru ia akan memantapkan budaya kerja perdana di Pejabat Pembangunan.

Sesi ice breaking dikendalikan oleh Prof. Dr. Ahmad Lotfi Ibrahim, Pengasas syarikat PYRACOSMIC dan juga modul khas 'You 'R' Special' yang telah diperkenalkan pada awal tahun 2006. Beliau juga adalah pakar motivasi dan sering dijemput sebagai tetamu khas di TV1, TV2,TV3 dan Radio 24. Diantara client beliau ialah Angkasa, Kolej Komuniti, TNB, STMB, Felda, Sekolah dan banyak lagi. Beliau juga pengamal perubatan alternatif.

Ujar beliau memulakan ice breaking "kita sebenarnya rapuh. Bila-bila masa kita boleh pergi  berjumpa Ilahi, sesungguhnya ujar beliau lagi "jodoh, ajal maut dan pertemuan berada ditangan Tuhan." Ada rahsia disebalik segala kejadian yang berlaku kepada kita.

Berikut adalah cerita beliau semasa mengendalikan sesi ice breaking. 

Pecahkan benteng M - Merajuk, Malas, Main, Manja,Malu hancurkan tembok L- Lemah, Lambat, Liat, Lesu. Kita disini hanyalah untuk berkongsi pengalaman, bukan untuk belajar. Kita belajar sama-sama. Saling berkongsi pengalaman. Manusia tetap manusia, dimanapun kita berada sifat kemanusiaan tetap sama, cuma jawatan sahaja yang berbeza tetapi tanggungjawab kepada Tuhan tetap sama.

Setiap individu dalam sesuatu organisasi bertanggungjawab dan berperanan mengikut tugas masing-masing. Makin besar gaji makin besar tanggungjawab, kadang-kadang kerana gaji terlalu besar dan tugas di pejabat juga besar, sekejap di US, kemudian ke UK, lepas itu ke Jepun, masa untuk keluarga tiada, kesannya perhubungan keluarga jadi rengang, anak-anak terabai kerana mengejar wang. Justeru janganlah meletakan wang per se dalam hidup.

Unified and Energy-Efficient Data Centre Aims to Meet Future Demand

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, Jul 01, 2010 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Cisco today announced its collaboration toward a green data center with Teliti Datacenters (Teliti), a locally owned systems integrator, at the inaugural Cisco Summit Malaysia 2010. Under this collaboration, Cisco will share data center best practices and work with Teliti as it develops a business model for data center management and a governance structure that enables Teliti to achieve world-class standards for data centre infrastructure technology in Malaysia.

Lawatan Datuk seri Hj. Khaled Nordin Ke Kolej Mawar Bertemu Mahasiswa Baru

Sistem PC Untuk Pendaftaran dan akhir sekali sistem sokongan bekalan elektrik dan penghawa dingin didalam server farm dimana semua server-server utama aplikasi yang terdapat di UiTM ditempatkan.

Peruntukan universiti bergantung KPI

KUALA LUMPUR 23 Jun - Penyediaan peruntukan kepada sesebuah universiti pada masa hadapan akan bergantung kepada faktor sejauh mana graduan yang dilahirkan oleh universiti berkenaan diterima oleh pihak industri.

Menteri Pengajian Tinggi, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin berkata, langkah tersebut sebahagian pendekatan kerajaan untuk melahirkan graduan berkemahiran tinggi agar dapat memenuhi kehendak pasaran.

"Bagi meningkatkan kompetensi graduan, faktor penerimaan graduan oleh pasaran akan dijadikan satu daripada Petunjuk Prestasi Utama (KPI) sesebuah universiti.

"Penyediaan peruntukan kewangan kepada universiti juga bergantung kepada sejauh mana universiti mencapai KPI ditetapkan termasuklah penerimaan oleh pasaran," katanya.

Beliau menggulung usul Rancangan Malaysia Ke-10 (RMK-10) kementerian tersebut di Dewan Rakyat di sini hari ini.

Teknologi Hijau Dalam ICT - Prof. Dr. Ir. Abd. Rahman Omar (Penolong Naib Canselor)

Prof. Dr. Ir. Abdul Rahman Omar, Penolong Naib Canselor (Pembangunan, Fasiliti dan ICT) semasa mengadakan perjumpaan dengan ketua-ketua unit/bahagian di Pejabat Pembangunan mencadangkan supaya elemen teknologi hijau diterapkan didalam semua projek pembangunan yang dikendalikan oleh UiTM. Objektif utama menerapkan unsur-unsur teknologi hijau adalah untuk mewujudkan persekitaran yang mesra alam, mesra pengguna dan mewujudkan penjimatan tenaga dalam jangkasama pendek dan jangkamasa panjang.

Dalam industri ICT, berikut adalah beberapa garispanduan yang wajar dijadikan garis panduan untuk digunapakai oleh pengguna ICT di UiTM.

A. Setup Perisian (software) untuk pengkomputeran hijau (green computing)

• Matikan background servis yang running di komputer tapi tidak bermanfaat. Bagi anda yang menggunakan linux dapat melihatnya menggunakan perintah System → Administration → System Monitor.
• Jangan gunakan plug-in flash karena akan banyak memakan energi layar monitor.
• Jika anda menggunakan Firefox or Sea Monkey, coba gunakan NoScript dan AdBlock Plus untuk mengurangi kandungan yang tidak di inginkan.
• Gunakan virtualisasi daripada menggunaan hardware baru.
• Mode power akan menentukan kadar penggunaan energi (Sleep mode – hemat 70% energi, Standby mode – hemat 90% energi, Hibernate mode – hemat 98% energi).

B. Pengkomputeran hijau untuk Komputer Peribadi

• Gunakan laptop kerana laptop hanya memerlukan 10% energy yang digunakan desktop.
• Flat screen dapat menjimatkan 30-70% energi berbanding monitor CRT.
• Matikan komputer jika tidak digunakan.
• Matikan monitor, jangan menggunakan screen saver.
• Pilih peralatan hardware berlogo energy star.
• Gunakan power supply yang lebih effisien.

C. Pengkomputeran hijau untuk Laptop

Gunakan power saving setting

• Kurangi penggunaan backlight
• Atur layar dan harddisk sleep/off setelah beberapa minit tanpa penggunaan
• Matikan bluetooth dan wifi ketika tidak digunakan
• Lepas kad MMC, SD, USB Flash apabila tidak digunakan
• Kecilkan volume suara dan kontras layar
• Kurangkan penggunaan IrDA (infrared) atau serial communication, karena ia banyak energi

Bulan ini menyaksikan berlakunya beberapa rombakan dalam struktur kepimpinan organisasi di UiTM. Prof. Dato' Dr. Nasuddin Othman diganti oleh Prof. Dato' Dr. Abdullah sebagai Timbalan Naib Canselor HEPA, Pn. Zuraida Hj. Yahya mengantikan En. Alias Taib sebagai Pengarah Pejabat Pengurusan Fasiliti, En. Alias Taib mengantikan En. Che Izam Abu Noh sebagai Pengarah Pejabat Pembangunan, En. Che Izam Abu Noh dilantik sebagai Timbalan Pengarah Pusat Sistem Maklumat Bersepadu manakala Prof. Dr Abd. Rahman Omar dilantik menjadi Penolong Naib Canselor mengantikan Dato' Mohd. Salleh. Tuan Haji Tamzil pula dipertangungjawabkan mengawalselia semua projek PFI pembinaan kampus baru UiTM di Pejabat Pembangunan.

Semoga UiTM lebih cemerlang dan gemilang dengan rombakan kepimpinan baru ini dalam mengharungi cabaran dekad 2010an. Value Management (Pengurusan Nilai) - Sebuah Pendekatan Praktikal Dalam Perlaksanaan Projek Kerajaan.

Saya berpeluang untuk menghadiri bengkel pengurusan nilai yang dianjurkan secara usahasama diantara UiTM (Pejabat Pembangunan) dan Unit Perancang Ekonomi (EPU) terhadap sebuah projek pembangunan yang bakal dilaksanakan di UiTM Shah Alam bermula pada 16 Mei 2010 sehingga 19 Mei 2010. Hasil daripada bengkel tersebut kami (UiTM dan EPU) berjaya membuat penjimatan sebanyak 7% daripada kos keseluruhan projek dan dalam masa yang sama kami berjaya mengoptimakan kehendak dan keperluan pengguna ke tahap maksima.

Bengkel tersebut dihadiri sendiri oleh Datin Hajah Ir. Mariyam Ismail, Pengarah Seksyen Pengurusan Nilai, Ir. Kharizan Timbalan Pengarah I, En. Mohd. Hazrin, Timbalan Pengarah II dan juga En. Che Izam Abu Noh, Pengarah Pejabat Pembangunan,UiTM dan En. Alias Taib, Pengarah Pejabat Pengurusan Fasiliti UiTM. Disepanjang berlangsungnya bengkel tersebut, ia berlaku dalam suasana harmoni walaupun terdapat beberapa ketika berlaku perdebatan dan perbahasan yang panas dalam mempertahankan idea dan pendapat masing-masing.

Kesimpulannya, bengkel ini boleh dikatakan berjaya dan saya mencadangkan kepada EPU untuk melaksanakan Value Management untuk semua projek yang diluluskan oleh EPU kerana ia banyak menguntungkan kerajaan, rakyat dan pengguna. Tahniah diucapkan kepada urusetia kerana berjaya melaksanakan bengkel tersebut dengan jayanya walaupun terpaksa meninggalkan keluarga sehingga lewat malam.

Agito takes a stab at killing expensive international roaming rates for iPhone, BlackBerry.

Agito Networks is mostly known for its dual-mode fixed-mobile convergence solutions, helping enterprise get their mobile phones off the cellular network and tied into a corporate PBX via Wi-Fi networks. This week Agito came out with something slightly new that is targeted at a very specific, yet pricey problem faced by many companies which do international business.

Many corporate telecom and mobility managers today probably support executives who travel internationally and need to buy a temporary international roaming plan for their smartphones while on the road. These short-term voice roaming minutes are pricey. We’re talking more than $1 per minute in many cases. If you have a lot of guys on the road, this can get out of hand fast. week Agito announced Agito Global Enterprise, a feature in the 4.0 release of its RoamAnywhere routers and clients.

This feature will automatically handover voice calls from an international cellular voice network and convert it into a VoIP call over a 3G data connection. Since most short-term international roaming plans offer relatively lower flat fees in the range of $20 or $30 for a unlimited data, this could be a huge savings for mobile employees who are traveling overseas. A $20 flat fee is a bargain compared to the $300-$400 a worker might rack up in talk time with a typical arrangement.

Late last month Pejman Roshan, founder and chief marketing officer for Agito, visited my office and gave me a demo of the cellular to VoIP handover on both a BlackBerry 9700 and an iPhone, both of which Agito also now supports as of this week. The voice quality was on par with what you might expect from either device, although there was a probably a half-second of latency in the call. Roshan attributed this to the fact that we were using a custom built demo version. The production version won’t be available until next month.

Scalable wireless LAN management tools simplify work, enable growth

For some enterprises, success with a wireless local area network (LAN) doesn't depend on sophisticated engineering within the access points (APs). Instead, success depends on the wireless LAN management and scalability afforded by a vendor's controllers and management software.

For Oklahoma's second-largest school district, flexible and scalable wireless LAN management remains a critical part of its budding wireless network, which spans 96 buildings and is supported by just four networking pros.

"We can't emphasize this enough -- [the challenge] is on the administrative side for us," said Kirk Damron, director of systems architecture at Tulsa Public Schools, which serves 50,000 students and staff on its network. "[We need] the ability to [manage a growing] number of devices with a smaller amount of work and a smaller workforce."

The district's early forays into wireless networking were patchy when they began about two years ago. One school would ask for a Wi-Fi hotspot, so Damron ordered an autonomous AP from Cisco Systems. He chose Cisco by default, since he had long used the networking giant's routing and switching gear.

"We never had a true vision to go and do a whole wireless deployment for the district, so it kind of ended up being this 'onesie, twosie' kind of thing … and that's if we had control over it," Damron said. "Sometimes we didn't, and next thing you knew, you had a NetGear router somewhere that somebody bought at Office Depot."

Looking for scalable wireless LAN management

Over the years, Tulsa Public amassed 250 Cisco fat APs across various buildings -- each site needing a virtual LAN (VLAN) manually configured from within the district's Catalyst 6500 series switches to connect the devices back to the district's main network.

Damron needed a more scalable and centralized option for wireless LAN management, but with the legacy equipment he had, his only choice for centralized wireless LAN management had been Cisco's Wireless Services Module (WiSM). He was turned off by the "extraordinarily expensive real estate" it took up in a blade chassis.

After evaluating offers and testing gear from Cisco, Aruba Networks, Trapeze Networks and Motorola, the networking team narrowed the choice to Cisco and Aruba. Easy and scalable wireless LAN management became the deciding factor, Damron said.

Tulsa Public gravitated to Aruba rather than Cisco because of Aruba's ability to support 2,000 APs with one controller, he said. The comparable Cisco controller supported only 300 APs. Over the past 18 months, Tulsa Public has deployed about 450 Aruba APs and has either traded in or tossed its old Cisco gear.

The district plans to grow its WLAN with 1,800 APs over the next five years -- hoping to migrate its Aruba 802.11a/b/g network to 802.11n toward the tail end of the process -- to support its "One-to-One Computing" initiative that would provide a wireless client device to all 43,000 students.

"We were looking at having to purchase multiple controllers to do the same thing as we could've done with one Aruba controller," Damron said. "It was hard for us to move past Cisco because we are a big Cisco shop, and when I say big, I mean big. We have millions of dollars of Cisco gear here, but they really did not have the same technology Aruba did."

Wireless LAN management simplified

Instead of three network engineers having to scramble to put out fires on Tulsa Public's growing wireless network, data engineer Charlie Diebold can handle most day-to-day operations from his seat in the district's data center.

Using the Wireless Intrusion Protection module in Aruba's controller, Diebold can remotely monitor security threats as they hit the APs -- rather than at the switches, as Cisco offered. The software also enables him to remotely customize security policy and set up one VLAN pool for all wireless devices.

Diebold said he also relishes the fact that overloaded APs are becoming a distant memory with Aruba's Adaptive Radio Management (ARM) software, aiding wireless LAN management by automatically load balancing APs.

"In the past, we always had to manually configure each device," he said. "Now, all I have to do is plug them in and they're on their way."

Although the upgrade has simplified wireless LAN management for Tulsa Public, some kinks remain. The district uses Microsoft Active Directory for all of its directory services, and Damron said that "the wireless network doesn't really integrate into that component as well as it should."

It's a minor quibble, though, relative to all the headaches the system has cured with simpler wireless LAN management.

"We're getting better performance out of the Aruba network. It's configured better and it's maintained better," Damron said. "I'm not saying Aruba makes a better access point than Cisco, but we're managing it much better, so we're getting a better product and a lot less complaints."

SHAH ALAM – Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) semalam, disaman RM32.4 juta kerana didakwa melanggar perjanjian berkaitan penggunaan sistem aplikasi elektronik.

Trius Computers Sdn Bhd memfailkan saman itu pada jam 12.30 tengah hari di Pejabat Pendaftar Mahkamah Tinggi Sivil di sini, menerusi peguam Yusman Che Aman.

Turut hadir ialah pengurus besar syarikat itu, Azinor Abdul Aziz.

Berdasarkan penyataan tuntutan, syarikat itu selaku plaintif mendakwa UiTM yang dinamakan defendan melanggar perjanjian bertarikh 15 Januari 2004.

Perjanjian itu melantik plaintif untuk membangunkan sistem perisian komputer iaitu Aplikasi Elektronik UiTM bertujuan memproses sistem permohonan kemasukan penuntut defendan.

Plaintif mendakwa perjanjian itu akan berjalan selama 15 tahun bermula 21 Ogos 2001 dan tamat 20 Ogos 2016.

Bagaimanapun, plaintif mendakwa defendan telah melanggar perjanjian itu selepas mengiklankan permohonan kemasukan pelajar baru sesi Julai 2010 melalui alamat web/URL http://www.online.uitm.edu.my pada 7 Mac lalu.

Ini kerana, plaintif mendakwa, alamat laman web/URL yang dijalankan plaintif ialah www.uitmonline.edu.my.

Plaintif seterusnya mendakwa, tindakan defendan mengiklankan alamat web itu secara tersiratnya menunjukkan defendan telah menamatkan perjanjian.

Plaintif juga mendakwa, telah mendapatkan penjelasan defendan pada 8 Mac lalu, tetapi tidak menerima sebarang tindak balas.

Justeru itu, plaintif mendakwa kerugian RM32.4 juta seperti dalam bentuk kos pembangunan perisian, kehilangan pendapatan untuk tujuh tahun dan menaik taraf pelbagai perisian.

Oleh itu, plaintif menuntut deklarasi bahawa penamatan perjanjian dan tindakan defendan tidak menggunakan khidmat plaintif adalah salah dan tidak sah serta bertentangan dengan perjanjian itu. :

Selain itu, plaintif memohon perintah supaya defendan dihalang menggunakan perkhidmatan sistem permohonan kemasukan selain daripada yang dikendalikan plaintif.

Plaintif juga memohon defendan dihalang daripada melantik pihak ketiga untuk mengendalikan sistem itu dan plaintif dibenarkan untuk meneruskan perkhidmatan.

Plaintif turut memohon, defendan menarik semula arahan pengiklanan itu dan mengemukakan jumlah angka penuh permohonan yang diterima bagi sesi Julai 2010.

Plaintif memohon ganti rugi, kos dan relif yang difikirkan sesuai.

Cisco supply chain problems persist, prompting even longer backorders

Two words of advice for enterprises planning to refresh their network hardware -- order early! There seems to be no end in sight to the string of backorders Cisco Systems has issued over the past year for some of its most popular networking gear, apparently caused by ongoing problems in the Cisco supply chain.

"Customers are asking us, 'Hey, what's the deal with the product? When can we expect delivery?' The distributors don't really tell us anything [either]," said Chris Church, technical services manager for a Cisco partner in the Midwest, which he declined to identify. "You finally reach a point where you want to stop giving people dates because you're concerned about whether or not [they're] going to be met."

Since January, Church has seen long lead times for most of Cisco's Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) firewalls. Four- to six-week shipping estimates issued earlier this year have since jumped to six or seven months. His usual contacts at Cisco have been vague as to the cause of, or remedy for, the delays.

"For pretty much every model except the very top-end one, which is the 5580, we were seeing very long lead times on them, and it hasn't gotten any better. If anything, it's gotten worse," said Church, who recently wrote about his Cisco supply chain woes on his blog, Layer 3, eliciting similar gripes from readers, one of whom reported a nine-month delay for ASAs.

"At first, they were saying March or April, and now they're saying June or July," he added. "Now, I'm starting to see some backorders on some of the [ISR] 2900 series routers that you might use to fill the role that a medium-range ASA might fill. It's starting to be a little bit of a ripple effect."

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one network engineer at a large U.S. enterprise that is a devout Cisco customer said he has experienced backlogs as long as 150 days for Catalyst 2960 switches from direct Cisco purchases, as well as used equipment from various resellers.

Customers have turned to used networking gear vendors like Network Hardware Resale for some of Cisco's most high-volume products, complaining of "notorious" wait times reaching up to five or six months for new ASA firewalls and 2960s, according to Chris Stone, NHR's mergers and acquisitions manager.

Although the reseller gets its supply from enterprises unloading surplus networking equipment, the massive shortages throughout the Cisco supply chain are eating away at NHR's inventory, Stone said. In some rare cases, he said, the flood of demand is forcing NHR to reduce its large, hallmark discounts as supply dwindles.

"[The difference is] we're shipping in 24 hours for the most difficult products to find," Stone said. "It's either six months [from Cisco] or 'I can have this tomorrow.'"

Meanwhile, some networking pros are taking things into their own hands. Matt Simmons, IT infrastructure manager at Golf Savings Bank in Mountlake Terrace, Wash., balked at what now seems like a comparatively short three- to four-week shipping delay on three ISR 2600 routers. Cisco told him the problem was a software issue, he said.

"I thought it was really bizarre, so we bought these routers from [reseller] CDW and said, 'Why don't we buy the one that'll get here in a week? And I'll install the images myself,'" Simmons said.

Component shortages may not abate soon in Cisco supply chain

Although Cisco representatives declined to comment for this story, the networking giant cautioned investors about the problem in its fourth-quarter report for 2009.

"We have experienced component shortages in the past," the company stated. "We may in the future experience a shortage of certain component parts as a result of our own manufacturing issues, manufacturing issues at our suppliers or contract manufacturers, capacity problems experienced by our suppliers or contract manufacturers, or strong demand in the industry for those parts."

Citing an improving economy, Cisco attributed shipping delays in the first and second fiscal quarters of 2010 to increased demand as well as labor "constraints" in the Cisco supply chain.

"There can be no assurance that we will not encounter these problems in the future," Cisco stated. "Although in many cases we use standard parts and components for our products, certain components are presently available only from a single source or limited sources, and a global economic downturn and related market uncertainty could negatively impact [their] availability."

It will probably take "a couple quarters" for suppliers to catch up, according to Zeus Kerravala, distinguished research fellow at Yankee Group. Even the gray market, such as eBay, is drying up as demand floods it, he said. Smaller value-added resellers (VARs) are also hurting.

"If you're dealing with a small local VAR who's your buddy, he's not going to have the purchasing power of a [reseller like] CDW," Kerravala said. "Even if Cisco does have product, they're going to prioritize."

Cisco's supply chain appears to be hit harder than competitors'

Networking vendors across the market have been singing the supply chain blues for the past year -- at the mercy of component manufacturers, Kerravala said. But the Cisco supply chain seems to be suffering most, he added, and is more noticeable because of its large installed base.

"I'm not sure where exactly in the supply chain the problem is, but it looks like some of the components used to make some of the high-performance interfaces -- gig and 10-gig connectors -- are where the delay is," Kerravala said. "From what I understand, it is a supply problem. It's not really from demand."

Compounding the problem is that some of the components that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) rely on for networking gear are also being used in some consumer electronics, Kerravala said. Although Cisco leads in enterprise networking, the supply chain gets better volume from consumer deals.

"If [a manufacturer's] choice is Cisco routers or mobile phones, the volume of mobile phones would be a hundred times what the volume would be for Cisco routers," Kerravala said, adding that he had heard of Juniper Networks experiencing supply chain backups. Juniper did not reply to a request for comment.

Parts shortages began for a host of OEMs for network equipment vendors in the second quarter of 2009, when component manufacturers had begun to scale down output, according to Loren Shalinsky, senior analyst at Dell'Oro Group Inc.

By fall, a wireless LAN (WLAN) chipset shortage left a number of vendors in limbo, including Cisco and Trapeze Networks. At the time, Aruba Networks attributed a shortage to increased demand and had delayed an announcement because of it. Aruba executives said the problem has since been resolved.

In January, Channel Insider reported that Cisco was still struggling to fill orders for core networking products owing to a shortage of the raw material used to manufacture semiconductors and other basic components of its switches and routers.

Hospital networks have long been operating under the preconceived notion that "the bigger the tether, the higher the performance," but new wireless network technologies have the ability to provide health care organizations more freedom at even greater speeds and in a smaller footprint than wired Ethernet networks. For this digital feature, DOTmed met up with Aruba Networks, a major provider of wireless infrastructure in the health care industry, to find out what happens when hospitals cut the cord.

There is a growing urgency within the health care informatics community to get electronic health records (EHR) online and upgraded as the Obama administration's guidelines for health IT funding begin to gel. While EHR may be driving the next generation of patient care and health care interoperability, these and other important applications fall flat without the proper network infrastructure -- a foundational technology also earmarked for federal stimulus money in the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA).

Secure wireless LAN for large UK university campus (Aruba Networks)

Aruba Networks has been selected by The University of Manchester to upgrade its campus wireless network with a high-speed 802.11n solution. The University of Manchester is the UK’s largest single-site university, and depends heavily upon IT infrastructure to support its 35,000 students, 11,400 faculty and staff, and world-class research, innovation, and learning initiatives. To address wireless usage that outstripped the capability of its legacy Cisco ‘Fat’ AP network, meet demanding future video and virtual learning needs, and provide pervasive coverage that may ultimately require in excess of 4,000 access points, the university conducted an extensive technical review of single, multi-channel, and adaptive wireless LANs. Aruba was selected after the university determined that Aruba’s adaptive wireless LANs were more scalable, Adaptive Radio Management (ARM) easier to deploy, and overall the network was more easily managed than competing systems. The network will be supplied by authorised platinum Aruba partner, Pervasive Networks.

“We looked for a solution that could scale to deliver a pervasive wireless network on campus, yet would be cost effective and both easy to deploy and easy to manage,” said Darren Hankinson of The University of Manchester’s IT Services. “Aruba won on all points: its ARM technology makes deployment simple and automates a lot of the management; it’s easy to build and manage all the different user communities we need to support; and the scalability of the solution is exemplary.”

Aruba’s massively scalable centralised architecture delivers switch-like performance while lowering IT operating expenses by simplifying network set-up, expansion, and updates. A master-local design allows master Mobility Controllers in the data centre to manage and update dispersed controllers supporting local 802.11n access points. This field-proven architecture minimises IT overhead while delivering visibility into, and fine-grained control of, the entire network.

An ICSA-certified policy-enforcement firewall provides identity-based security, Quality of Service control, and traffic management capabilities. The firewall classifies traffic on the basis of user identity, device type, location, and time of day, and provides differentiated access for different classes of users. Guest access to applications and resources, and even bandwidth consumed, are tightly controlled by the firewall and an integrated captive portal.

Aruba’s Mobility Controllers authenticate users through Active Directory, RADIUS, LDAP and other commonly employed databases. Until such time as they are decommissioned, traffic from the 400 legacy Cisco ‘Fat’ APs will be passed through the Aruba controllers for authentication to deliver a uniform end-user experience.

To optimise Wi-Fi performance in real-time, ARM technology uses infrastructure-based controls to manage how Wi-Fi clients interact, and ensure that 802.11n data, voice, and video applications have sufficient network resources to operate properly. Acting on their own, Wi-Fi clients do not always work cooperatively with other clients, or select the optimal band, channel, and access point. These issues are exacerbated in environments like lecture halls and dormitories with high-bandwidth applications and densely-packed clients. ARM has been demonstrated to increase 802.11n throughput by more than 200%, enabling more than 100 laptops to reliably display multi-media lectures delivered from a single access point.

“Scaling a wireless LAN to support thousands of high-speed 802.11n access points is no mean feat,” said Bob Vickers, sales director of Aruba UK and Ireland. “It requires high throughput controllers, automatic management of the ever-changing RF environment, and centralised management. The University of Manchester validated that the robustness and scalability of Aruba’s adaptive wireless LANs make them a best-in-class solution for the rigors of a large university deployment.”

Pusat Latihan Kampung Gajah - Kenangan Lalu Terungkap Kembali

Pada hari ini sehingga khamis ini saya berkursus di Pusat Latihan UiTM Kampung Gajah Perak. Kami sampai kira-kira jam 12.30 tengah hari dengan menaiki bas UiTM. Kali terakhir saya sampai di sini kira-kira 5 tahun yang lalu, masa itu, Pusat Latihan Kampung Gajah tidak secantik macam sekarang. Secara keseluruhan kemudahan yang terdapat di Pusat Latihan Kampung Gajah ini boleh dikelaskan sebagai 3 bintang.

Semasa menyampaikan ucapan perasmian Tuan Haji Junaidi Muslim, Timbalan Pengarah, Pejabat Pembangunan menekankan betapa ilmu penting untuk menjadi membina kewibawaan. Kursus asas Pengurusan Projek ini bertujuan untuk mendedahkan semua peserta selok belok dalam mengendalikan projek pembangunan. Justeru, beliau menyarankan supaya peluang berkursus ini perlu digarapi sepenuhnya sebagai peluang untuk menimba ilmu dalam bidang pengurusan projek.
