MALAYSIAN KILLED IN KABUL TERRORIST ATTACK

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets to inform that a Malaysian national was killed in the attack on Taverna du Liban Restaurant in Kabul, Afghanistan on 17 January 2014. The confirmation was conveyed through the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur as the British Embassy in Kabul holds consular responsibility for unrepresented Commonwealth nationals in Afghanistan.

Pending concurrence of the spouse who is now working in Liberia, the identity of the deceased will not be disclosed at this moment. The Ministry is currently seeking assistance from local authorities to locate the family and next of kin of the deceased living in Malaysia.

The incident has reportedly claimed more than 21 lives including 13 foreigners from at least six countries including the United States, Canada, Britain, Russia and Lebanon. The Taliban claimed responsibility of the terrorist attack in retaliation for a coalition airstrike on 15 January 2014 which has caused several Afghan civilians casualties in a village north of Kabul.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to liaise with the High Commission of Malaysia in New Delhi, India which is concurrently accredited to Afghanistan and relevant authorities in Afghanistan on the development on the matter.
